“Curiosity Fuels Knowledge: Learning Starts with Questions.”

Rejsekort in Denmark.

What comes to your mind when you think of travelling?

Tickets? Mode of transport?

We all travel in one or other public transport now and then. I am used to buying tickets from start to end destination. It really becomes cumbersome when I need to reach a destination by traveling through different mode of transport. The biggest challenge is, however, to buy tickets from different transport vendors.

Have you heard of any travel card using which you can travel across the country using bus, train or speed boat?

People bike everyday for obvious reasons. But everyday is not Sunday. Denmark is a place where it’s super windy. When your nose turns red and fingers turn blue, one needs to hop into a warm bus for commuting. That is, if you wish not to travel by car. Thankfully, Denmark has a fairly extensive public transport network, and the Rejsekort enables you to use it all in a seamless way.

How to avail for the Rejsekort and have a hassle free travel in the city?

The Rejsekort is simply a contact less card which you can use to check-in and -out of all public transport in Denmark. Rejsekort is far easier way to transport than having to buy multiple tickets using those really confusing system. You can use it for buses, trains, metro and boats. Before you start to think of getting one for yourself, let me give you a heads up with a tiny bit of motivation for the same – the Rejsekort almost halves the cost of your journey!

Types of Rejsekort

The rejsekort is available with many options for personal use, business travel, for schools. I will outline two of the most important ones that are used often.

Note: To know more about types of Rejsekort and discounts you can visit https://www.rejsekort.dk/Bestil

Rejsekort Anonymous – If you don’t have a CPR yet, or you don’t want your personal travel information accessible to the transport authorities, then you can go for an Anonymous one.

Rejsekort Personal- If you already have a CPR number then you can order a personal Rejsekort online which gives you bigger discounts. You can also block the card if you ever happened to lose it.

Where to buy?

You can buy an Rejsekort anonymous at one of the customer service center or at selected shops such as 7 Eleven in the stations. It costs 80DKK and you will receive it immediately. Recharge it with the required amount and you are ready to go. This is the easiest and quickest way to get a Rejsekort on to your hand.

A ‘Rejsekort personal’ can be ordered from the Rejsekort website for 50DKK. You will have to log in using your NEM ID and fill in all the necessary details. The personal Rejsekort might not be a option if you do not have a CPR number. If you are visiting Denmark for less than three months then Rejsekort anonymous is your option. In couple of weeks it will be delivered to your mail box. Always remember to check-in and -out each time you get on a train, bus, or the metro.

How to use?

There are blue check-in and check-out points at every station, and in all buses. You just tap your card to the machine that says ‘Check-Ind’ to begin your journey and then tap out at the machine that says ‘Check-Ud’ to end the journey -simple! So you can use your Rejsekort on all modes of public transport throughout Denmark, even when your journey uses multiple modes of transport.

What if you forget to check out? What happens then?

Usually if you don’t check out you will be charged maximum price for the journey. However, the check-out process can also be done using Check Udvej App. Now that is really convenient.

Note: The Check Udvej app cannot be used with anonymous card.

You can check in multiple people using a single card, as well as pets and bicycles, which is really handy if you have a friend visiting. Just remember to press ‘EKSTRA’ on the check-in point before you tap your card. You’ll be provided with options and you can then select what you need. On-screen instructions language can be selected to English if needed.

Recharge Procedure

The most important thing to remember is to check your balance and top-up at the machines located in stations. If you have a Rejsekort personal, you can also do this online. There’s nothing more annoying than trying to get on a bus, finding that your balance is too low, and then having to walk all the way to the nearest train or metro station. You can always check your card balance using the Resjekort Status App .

If you’re using a Rejsekort anonymous, the system never allows you to buy a ticket if your balance is below 70 DKK. You can get back the money in the card when you surrender it to the customer service. It is worthwhile getting the card for savings on ticket price.

An advantage of Rejsekort personal in addition to being able to top-up online is that, you can set up to reload you card automatically when your balance gets too low.

Note: This feature is only available if you have a debit card from banks in Denmark.

Public transport in Denmark operates on a trust-based system. You can rarely see inspectors checking for validating cards or tickets, and there is no barriers for entry or exit at any metro station. However, there is a hefty fine if you are caught without a ticket- so embrace the cozy Scandic community values and remember to check in.

Honesty is the best policy!!!
